SPRINGFIELD - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich has appointed Emeritus Professor Proshanta Nandi of Springfield to a six-year term on the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Nandi succeeds Lee H. Walker for a term ending in January 2009.

Professor Nandi retired as chairperson of the sociology and anthropology department at the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2002. Before joining the faculty at UIS, Nandi taught at Ohio University, and served as a research sociologist for a Ford Foundation project in India. In 1998, he spent the summer as a visiting professor at Heilongjiang University in Harbin, China.

Nandi is author of Quality of Life of Asian Americans and editor of Globalization and the Evolving World Society. He has also published many articles in sociological and education journals, both in the United States and internationally.

He holds master's degrees in commerce and economics from Gorakhpur University in India, where he also obtained a master's in sociology, which attracted his attention as it became a new discipline of study in India in the late 1950s. He completed a Fulbright Scholarship leading to study at the University of Minnesota where he obtained another master's degree and his Ph.D.

Nandi has been active in a broad array of professional meetings and organizations, including World Congresses of the International Sociological Association, the American Sociological Association, the Third World Conference at Chicago, the National Association for Ethnic Studies, the Midwest Sociological Society, the Illinois Sociological Association, and the Illinois Psychological Association.

He has held positions in several Springfield area professional and cultural organizations, including the India Association of Greater Springfield, the Organization of Asian Americans, the World Federalists Association, and diversity task forces for the Springfield public schools and UIS.
