GOVERNOR NAMES ALICE HAYES TO IBHE

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich has named Alice B. Hayes, a former university president, to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. A former administrator and current Trustee at Loyola University of Chicago, Hayes will represent private colleges and universities on the Board.

Hayes served as President of the University of San Diego from July 1995 until June 2003. She also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Louis University, and held a variety of academic and administrative posts at Loyola, including Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1987 to 1989.

She has degrees from three Illinois institutions - a B.S. from Mundelein College, a M.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

Hayes is a member of the Loyola University Board of Trustees, has served on the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, and has been a consultant/evaluator for various higher education accrediting agencies. From the early to mid-1980s, she was a member of the space biology program for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In addition, she has been on the Board of Directors for the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and sits on the National Review Board for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. She has participated in Botanical Delegations to South Africa, the People's Republic of China, and the Soviet Union.

Hayes' community activities include serving on the boards of the San Diego Historical Society, the Urban League, Catholic Charities, the St. Louis Science Center, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Dr. Hayes resides in Chicago.
