SPRINGFIELD – In a move to strengthen the State’s role in improving diversity at Illinois colleges and universities, the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) has established a “Diversity and Outreach” executive position to bring greater attention to improving the educational attainment of disadvantaged, minority and/or low-income students, and to bring a greater focus on diversity in other aspects of public higher education in Illinois.

IBHE appointed Deputy Director Terry Nunn to lead the agency’s Diversity and Outreach efforts. Nunn, who most recently served as the Deputy Director for Grants Administration, will also become the State Director for IBHE’s Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Program.

IBHE Executive Director Judy Erwin said, “Improving the educational attainment of underrepresented groups in higher education must be a primary focus for the State of Illinois and IBHE. Given the achievement gap for minority college students, IBHE will work with Illinois school districts, employers, community organizations, and colleges and universities to close that achievement gap. IBHE will challenge colleges and universities to rededicate their efforts to improve diversity among students, faculty, and administrators.

“With Terry Nunn’s leadership, IBHE intends to make increased diversity in higher education a core priority of higher education policy for the State of Illinois. We look forward to working with Illinois colleges and universities and their students and faculty to achieve much greater participation for all segments of our diverse State,” Erwin continued.

As the State Director of the DFI Program, Nunn will direct the $2.8 million grant program administered by the IBHE to encourage minority graduate students to complete academic programs leading to faculty positions in Illinois. Before coming to IBHE in 2000, Nunn held leadership positions at the Illinois State Board of Education for 24 years. Nunn has a rich history of supporting P-20 educational initiatives and diversity efforts throughout Illinois.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education is the State’s coordinating agency for postsecondary education.
